"Hi
Pauline. My best friend of 33 years met a man while working on the road as a
technician. After knowing him for three weeks she's decided to get married and try to get full custody of her kids
(all under age 15) so they can all move to his house in Iowa. They plan to get married in August (or sooner). When asked 'Why the rush?' the answer they both give is 'We're in love.' Love, although important, is one of the WORST reasons to get married.
You marry someone because of what you can
tolerate. In my opinion, you need to know someone before making a jump this big because it impacts so many lives (mostly her kids) and 3 weeks is not enough time to know ANYONE. Also, according to her she's got NOTHING here worth staying for and she wants something for HER now. Needless to say being lumped into the
'nothing' category after all this time hurts like hell, but still, I'm concerned for her. I think much of what she's saying comes out of fear of loneliness and the fact I'm asking questions she doesn't want to
consider. I know there's no talking her out of anything
once she has her mind set on it and she's set on doing this. After years of making bad choices in men, I have a feeling this guy is just another bad mistake. But again, I don't know him at all and getting answers from her is like pulling teeth. So how will these choices impact
our relationship and what's the deal with the guy she plans to marry? Any thoughts?"

"Hi
Nancy. Yes, as a true friend, I can sooo see your
concern. She is a beautiful person. We all take chances sometimes and they can be wrong or right, but I do know when you
fall in love no one can change your mind! It’s been a long time for her
'Mr. Right' to come along so she will go with this.
Like you, my concern is her children because they have opinions.
They're older now and chance are they don't want to
go with her. Mostly, because of fear since they don’t know him either.
But she wants a relationship so bad that she will go.
My concern is you're worried for her and you're right to worry
for people who make big changes like this. I would like her to do some detective work and check him out on Google or his family there;
she needs to get the scope of everything. His
family knows the truth about him so she needs to
meet them and spend time with them too before
walking down the aisle. As you mentioned, you
don't marry people because of what you love
about them. You marry them because of what you
can tolerate. There hasn't been enough time for
her to see his true basic character yet. As for
her defensiveness about the questions when
asked, she's trying to believe everything will work out,
but at this point everyone is against it. So
although you might be trying to get answers
without judgment, she's lumping you in with
everyone else even though that's not the case.
In the end, the biggest concern everyone has is
for the children because if they go then her
family has no idea how this new man will treat them,
and in truth, neither does she. Unfortunately
for her, I think they're better off here with their dad
and the rest of the family rather than with her
alone. As for her relationship with the new man
I do believe it could work. I think they do care
for each other but whether the sacrifices she's
making to be with him will be worth it to her in
the end...that I can't see. Again, time is
what's needed here to see the bigger picture,
but I hope it works out for both of
you."
